The Holiday Season is in the Air
I love EVERYTHING about the holiday season. Beginning this week we will be submerged in time with family, comfort food, backyard football games, and soon the sounds of Christmas carols. Another thing I really love about the holidays, are the smells…pumpkin and peppermint….cranberry and gingerbread…hot chocolate and coffee. I can’t help but smile thinking about it.
Our sense of smell is one of the strongest links to memory, so it’s no surprise the smell of coffee brewing in the morning will forever remind me of my grandmother, Peg Peg. This is her FAVORITE time of year.
Isn’t she beautiful. She was inside and out.
Oh, and that’s me.
When I was 8 my family moved back home to Alabama and for a year we lived with my grandparents (and lucky for us when we did move, it was only two houses down the street). And while having so many people under one roof could be a little chaotic, it gave me some of the best memories of my childhood. I think about the times we would set up shop with groceries from Peg Peg’s pantry, and she would come and buy them back from us. Or how we used to spend hours at the kitchen table playing Gin Rummy. I loved how she would leave her Christmas shopping list on the counter for us to see, but it would all be written in short hand just to tease us. These memories are the best. However, one that really stands out is how my grandmother began every morning (and afternoon for that matter) with a cup of coffee. The smell was a staple in their house and now in my memory. We lost my grandmother almost ten years ago, and I am so glad I have these fond time with her to look back on.
Dunkin was sweet enough to share some samples of the Gingerbread Cookie blend to us, and it was amazing! Of course I had to #instagram it! Try it with a few gingersnaps for optimal enjoyment :o)
Do you have any fond memories linked to smells???
I’d love to hear them..maybe over a cup of coffee :o)
Thank you to Dunkin’ Donuts® packaged coffee at grocery for being a sponsor. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective. All opinions expressed here are my own.
Love the picture. Grandmas are the best! I miss mine…especially this time of year.
Thanks for sharing those memories…I always remember my grandma smelling faintly of baby powder. (I miss her!)
I always give my hubby coffee for Xmas in his stocking, we've actually never tried Dunkin' Donuts-but I'll be picking some up next time I'm at the store to try! Thanks!
Aren't Grandma memories the best? It's the safest place in the world! I love DD coffee. When I went to Maine, we saw one on EVERY corner!
What a sweet memory! My grandma has chewed the same kind of gum for years, so the smell of Trident reminds me of her :)
Loved this post! I'm big on the smells of Christmas too, and coffee brewing is the morning is right up there. I'm going to have to pick up some of these fun flavors next time I'm across the border. I think the mint mocha is the one for me!
What a sweet post! Love! Oh, and that's my fave coffee….no joke! :)
The smell of coffee instantly takes me back to Peg Peg's house. Thanks for making me start the day off with tears :), missing our Peg Peg. Glad she is watching over us with the Lord.
